Sopi quarter
Year: 2024 autumn semester (III year)
Typology: Planning
Location: Tallinn, city center
In cooperation: Sarah-Elisbeth Haidak, Marleen Riiner, Romet Trommel
The historical connection between the Uus Maailm and Kassisaba districts has gradually disappeared over the decades due to the introduction of heavily trafficked streets such as Luise and Endla, as well as nearby intersections with high levels of noise and air pollution, which make movement in the area less pleasant.
The goal of the Sopi Quarter is to reconnect these two neighbourhoods by introducing a landscape of forest-like greenery and calm within the urban fabric. A central green corridor is planned between Jakob Westholm Gymnasium and the art school, forming a key link between the districts. Throughout the quarter, meandering pedestrian routes are interspersed with small “niches” where people can pause, rest, and spend time.
To bring activity into the area, several office buildings and smaller business spaces are planned, and the quarter is designed to be traversed by a tram line aligned with Tallinn’s public transport development strategy.
